A man who avoided prison for 13 years - 19 Nov 2014 03:24

A man who avoided prison for 13 years because of a clerical error is in trouble again, just months after a Missouri judge released him from his original sentence for armed robbery and declared him a "good man and a changed man."Cornealious "Mike" Anderson was arrested on second-degree robbery charges for allegedly grabbing a woman's purse in downtown St. Louis early Sunday and briefly dragging her while trying to pull the bag from her shoulder. Prosecutors said Monday that Anderson matched a description given to police by the victim and a witness, both of whom later identified him as the robber, but his attorney said police made a big mistake."There was a report of a man who completely and totally did not match my client's description as the alleged purse snatcher," his attorney, Patrick Megaro, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "It makes me wonder what is going on out there in St. Louis."Anderson is free on $10,000 bond. Megaro didn't return a message Tuesday from The Associated Press.Anderson was sentenced to 13 years in prison for the armed robbery of a Burger King worker in St. Charles County, just north of St. Louis, in 2000. He waited for information on when and where to report to prison, but the order never came, he told the AP earlier this year.

Anderson, now 37, later started his own carpentry business, married, had children, coached youth football and volunteered at his church in Webster Groves, aWelcome to m-shoesbox sports shoes suburb of St. Louis. When prison officials found the clerical error in July 2013, as Anderson's prison term was set to end, eight U.S. marshals were sent to his home and took him to prison. He remained in jail until May. - Comments: 0

About one in every 450 Americans identify as transgender, according to a 2011 study by the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law.

In 2004, when Reed was born, the American Medical Association hadn’t yet issued standards of care for the treatment of transgender adults, let alone kids.
Even today, “the medical community knows very little about transgenderism,” says Dr. Jack Drescher, a distinguished fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. For many years, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders included a condition called “gender identity disorder,” classifying it as the discomfort a transgender person feels in his or her body.m-shoesbox Last year, a panel of experts at the APA considered removing the diagnosis from the DSM, as happened with homosexuality in 1974. Instead, they changed the name to “gender dysphoria” but left the diagnosis in place.

Drescher says that the name change was an attempt to destigmatize the condition. “For the DSM, ‘do less harm’ meant changing the language and keeping the diagnosis in so people still have access to care,” he says. “If it’s taken out of DSM, no one would pay for treatment. Without a diagnosis code you can’t get hormones, you can’t get surgery.” - Comments: 0

When it was launched it looked like nothing else - 29 Oct 2014 02:09

When it was launched it looked like nothing else. Its pizza slice-like design made it one of the most stable ships for its size and it has since spawned a whole new class of crazy looking vessels. Yet this clandestine spy ship is most notorious in Russia, whose military absolutely detests its existence.

Launched in 1992, the 7,560 ton displacement Marjata, the third Norwegian spy ship to carry that name, has a pretty tough primary mission- to chase around and shadow the Russian Navy's incredibly powerful, Barents and Norwegian Sea based Northern Fleet, through some of the most challenging sea conditions in the m-shoesbox world.

Her unique 'Ramform' hull was a revelation of sorts in the maritime design world when she was launched. The design is not only an incredibly stable one, which helps when your mission includes packing around delicate listening sensors and ELINT surveillance gear, but it also allows for generous interior volume and it can stay afloat in heavy seas with large portions of its hull well under the waterline. In addition, cargo shifting and exact trimming is much less critical with a Ramform hull design than it is with traditional hull configurations. The ship's wedge shape design also allows for very quiet operation, which is important for monitoring the underwater activities of potentially unfriendly navies. - Comments: 0

Mr. Young compares digital recordings today - 20 Oct 2014 03:51

Mr. Young compares digital recordings today with Xeroxes of artwork—the difference between seeing the “Mona Lisa” up close and seeing a copy. For one thing, he says, it’s harder to play music loudly using today’s compressed files. “Music doesn’t sound good on speakers anymore,” he says. “It hurts and didn’t used to hurt.” He laments the way people on the street look like they’re living in their own world while they’re “listening to something greatly depleted.”

His affinity for new technology only goes so far. Mr. Young says that he doesn’t spend much time on social media. “I use it as a tool to announce I have a new project, but I’m too well-known to be up there on social media,” he says. m-shoesbox “It’s a waste of my time.”

Mr. Young was born in Toronto. His father was an author, and his mother edited his father’s books. He has three grown children, who regularly join him on tour—particularly his son Ben, a quadriplegic with cerebral palsy whom he calls “our spiritual leader.” Mr. Young currently lives along the coast of California, on his 101-year-old Baltic Trader, a sailboat he bought in 1975. His second home is his tour bus on the road, where he feels most comfortable. “I like moving around,” he says. “I’ve done it my whole life, and it makes me feel good…It makes me feel at home.” - Comments: 0

The air was hot and full of wind - 11 Oct 2014 02:57

Six months before, Chris had conceived of Freedom Flies as a reaction to what he considered to be a disturbing technological trend at the U.S.-Mexico border. One private militia group, the American Border Patrol, had built a twenty-pound, wooden drone to watch for undocumented immigrants. They had been flying the Border Hawk, as they named it, consistently since 2004. Now, the government was following their example. The U.S. Border Patrol had been testing unmanned aircraft for use along the Mexico line since 2003, and as of summer 2005, it was preparing to launch its first Predator. The government's goal was to enforce the law. Chris' concern was that they would enforce it selectively — focusing on the immigrants trying to reach the U.S. but not on the "border extremists" within the U.S. trying to stop m-shoesbox.

Chris liked to build robots, and he loved to help an underdog. So, in contrast to the Border Patrol, he made Freedom Flies according to a countervailing set of priorities: to help migrants survive the desert and to monitor their encounters with militias. - Comments: 0

The undefeated Zingano's moment of triumph - 30 Sep 2014 02:38

The undefeated Zingano's moment of triumph was 17 months in the making. She had a memorable UFC debut in April 2013, when she rallied from a shaky start to finish former Strikeforce champion Miesha Tate in the third round. With the victory over Tate, Zingano was supposed to earn a coaching slot opposite Ronda Rousey on "The Ultimate Fighter," along with a shot at her women's bantamweight title at the end of the show.Instead, Zingano injured a knee and had to drop out of both the show and the title shot. While she was out, she suffered through the death of her estranged husband m-shoesbox.

While coping with her out-of-the-ring issues, Zingano watched Rousey defend her title three times, as the champion defeated Tate, Sara McMann and Alexis Davis. And even as she prepared for her return, Zingano had to endure what seemed an endless period of speculation over whom Rousey might fight next. There was Gina Carano, the first star of women's MMA. There's the ever-looming specter of Cris "Cyborg" Justino. And there's undefeated Brazilian Bethe Correia, who has been defeating Rousey's friends one-by-one and taunting the champ while she does it. - Comments: 0

Well, without being able to roll, skating would definitely - 24 Sep 2014 02:49

Well, without being able to roll, skating would definitely be out of the question. And if you’re going to spend a small fortune on a glorified piece of driftwood, the investment piece should probably be kept safe from further destruction and deterioration.

But the possibility of someone buying the dressed-up scrap lumber isn’t completely out of the question. The designer has such die-hard supporters that there’s even a Tumblr page called peoplewearingrickowens.tumblr.com, dedicated to tracking his items on everyone from Taylor Swift to street-stylers.m-shoesbox.

And Kim Kardashian, perhaps Owens’s biggest fan of all, was spotted multiple times in the past few weeks rocking turtlenecks that retail for more than $1,000 each. Maybe this level of adoration from one-half of the “world’s most talked about couple” means that Owens can sell such an impractical item for an exorbitant price. The Wests are known for their unique and extravagant gift-giving (who could forget the George Condo-painted Birkin bag that the reality star was gifted?), so maybe the skateboard deck is already wrapped up with a bow and on its way to Yeezus. - Comments: 0

Warren Buffett is perhaps the greatest investor of all time - 18 Sep 2014 02:12

Warren Buffett is perhaps the greatest investor of all time, and he has a simple solution that could help an individual turn $40 into $10 million.

A few years ago, Berkshire Hathaway CEO and Chairman Warren Buffett spoke about one of his favorite companies, Coca-Cola, and how after dividends, stock splits, and patient reinvestment, someone who bought just $40 worth of the company's stock when it went public in 1919 would now have more than $5 million.

Yet in April 2012, when the board of directors proposed a stock split of the beloved soft-drink manufacturer, that figure was updated and the company noted that original $40 would now be worth $9.8 million. A little back-of-the-envelope math of the total return of Coke since May 2012 would mean that $9.8 million is now worth about $10.8 million.

The power of m-shoesbox patience
I know that $40 in 1919 is very different from $40 today. However, even after factoring for inflation, it turns out to be $540 in today's money. Put differently, would you rather have an Xbox One, or almost $11 million?

But the thing is, it isn't even as though an investment in Coca-Cola was a no-brainer at that point, or in the near century since then. Sugar prices were rising. World War I had just ended a year prior. The Great Depression happened a few years later. World War II resulted in sugar rationing. And there have been countless other things over the past 100 years that would cause someone to question whether their money should be in stocks, much less one of a consumer-goods company like Coca-Cola. - Comments: 0

He spent eight years bending the ear of George W. Bush. On Wednesday - 11 Sep 2014 02:39

He spent eight years bending the ear of George W. Bush. On Wednesday, former vice president Dick Cheney sought to advise another US leader, this time over how to contend with violent jihadists.

In a Washington speech, Cheney, an architect of the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, criticized a "disengaged" President Barack Obama for his defensive posture in the face of extremist threats, including those posed by the Islamic State (IS).

"While the president was claiming the tide of war was receding and core Al-Qaeda had been decimated, the threat was actually increasing," Cheney said at the American Enterprise Institute think tank where he received a standing ovation m-shoesbox.

"From Iraq, Syria and Yemen, over to Pakistan, all the way down to Somalia and west to Nigeria –- in various places under various names — a whole new wave of jihadists was on the rise."

Cheney has served four Republican presidents, and while conservatives applaud his hawkish national security positions, he is despised by many Democrats for his role in invading Iraq.

Speaking hours before Obama unveils his IS strategy, Cheney said the administration needed to take a stronger tack. - Comments: 0

The wide receiver had not been cleared for contact - 03 Sep 2014 03:35

The wide receiver had not been cleared for contact and Monday's appearance on the practice field was his first since he suffered a concussion Aug. 23.

"Tonight's news regarding Wes is very disappointing for our team, but we understand the league's authority in this area," Broncos coach John Fox said in a statement. "While it's unfortunate to not have him to start the year, I have full confidence in our wide receivers and expect that group to continue playing at a high level.

"I have no doubt that Wes will remain focused on his preparations for the season and stay in excellent shape during his time away from the team."

Welker's suspension is a huge blow to the Broncos' receiving game. Last season only four wide receivers caught passes for Denver and nearly 60 percent of those receptions will not be on the field in Week 1, as Eric Decker is now with the Jets and Welker is suspended, according to ESPN Stats & Information m-shoesbox.

The Broncos signed free agent receiver Emmanuel Sanders during the offseason and drafted rookie receiver Cody Latimer.

Over the last two seasons, only five players in the NFL averaged more targets per game than Welker. Welker ranks tied for eighth in the league in total targets over that span, despite missing three games, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

The Broncos have a tough start to the season, as they open up with four straight games against teams that won 10-or-more games last season. - Comments: 0
